C.J. Garland: From Showjumping to Legendary Stakes Reined Cow Horse Winner

C.J. Garland
C.J. Garland, an accomplished cow horse competitor from Leoti, Kansas, recently won the $10,000 Legendary Stakes bonus in Reined Cow Horse. CJ’s journey to this victory is rooted in a deep passion for horses that began in her early childhood.

"We compete a lot in ranch horse and cow horse, and it's definitely a bonus if they're Legendary Stakes events."

Originally from the Midwest, C.J. competed in 3-Day Eventing and Show Jumping until her late teens. She transitioned to western riding after moving to Colorado in the early 2000’s. Her husband and trainer, Jason Perry, introduced her to Reined Cow Horse and Versatility Ranch Horse about 10 years ago. She has been an avid competitor for about 8 years in both. In fact, the horse that C.J. first showed in Reined Cow Horse is Outn The Boonsdocs’s sire, Legendary Stallion, Cats Royal Boon. C.J. embraces both the challenge and the exhilaration of both sports wholeheartedly.

Training for competitions is as much a mental game as a physical one, according to C.J. Ensuring that she and her horse are of sound mind and body is the most important thing. She also attributes her success to having a dedicated daily support system at the barn to keep her horse in peak condition and dialed in. Living on a cow-calf operation, C.J. and Outn The Boondocs use real life ranch work to both practice for competition and clear their minds and have some fun!

"Outn the Boondocks loves to work a cow. If a horse could crave a job, it is her working a cow."

Outn the Boondocs means a lot to C.J., not only as a successful show horse, but an important part of the legacy she and Jason are working to build on their ranch. Bred by C.J and Jason and trained by Jason, Outn the Boondocks exhibits remarkable natural ability and enthusiasm for show life but loves doing the dirty jobs on the ranch just as much.

C.J.’s advice for aspiring competitors underscores the importance of finding a good trainer and not being afraid to enter events, regardless of skill level. She emphasizes that there are opportunities for everyone and encourages newcomers to seek guidance and gradually improve their skills and horsepower.

"Don't feel like you're not good enough. There are events truly out there for everybody."

When asked what she would do with the $10,000 bonus from Legendary Stakes, C.J. said it would likely be reinvested into entry fees, allowing her to enter more events.

The Perrys have been involved with Legendary Stakes from the start, in addition to Outn the Boondocks’ sire, Cats Royal Boon, they have 2 other stallions enrolled in Legendary Stakes and several competition horses they enter in multiple categories.

When asked if Legendary Stakes has changed her approach to choosing events, C.J. says she now strategically seeks out events that align with Legendary Stakes categories and their competitive goals.
